Delete the HD in Device Manager and reboot

I have the same "problem". I have just uninstalled my D drive and on
restarting it was back as if nothing had happened with the same error
message as before. I am timid of trying this with drive C but suspect the
result would be the same. From half remembered googling some days ago I
understand that this is typically the result of updating a Nvidia display
adaptor (mine is Nvidia 7600 GS with passive cooling, driver version
7.15.11.6222) and that it is a harmless new "feature" intended to help when
unplugging removable SCSI hard drives. The persistent icon in the sys tray
is just a minor irritation that should be ignored. Getting rid of it is
likely to mean that it won't appear when it is needed for a removable USB
device.
