how to use local disk D

I can not access or use my d drive for downloads, etc.. I do not know how to
get new downloads to go on that drive, it wont let me choose which drive it
puts it all on my C drive.. which means my free space on my new laptop is
very limited.. Can someone help me, please?

More information, please. What is your D: drive? What happens when you
point a download to it? If you get an error message, please quote the
exact text.

Go to Administrative Tools>Disk Management and look at what you actually
have as far as a hard drive and its partitions. Post what you see.

You give no information about your laptop...
Assumption:

Most likely - the D:\ drive on your "new laptop"
is a restore partition created by the manufacturer of your laptop.
If this is the case you cannot access it - by design.

If you don't care about maintaining the image stored on this partition
if case you have to reinstall - you may be able to reformat via computer
management > disk management - it and use the space.

Do not recommend this unless you are extremely knowledgeable about
your hardware and installation of OS.

My Recovery (D) is full. everytime my computer tries to back up files It tells me "Backup failed" I cannot get into D to delete old files. Whatcan I do?

You are not supposed to backup to the Recovery partition. That should only
contain the files necessary to return your computer to it's original state.
If you do not have another drive, then purchase an external USB drive, and
backup to that.

The recovery drive contains files that are required to recover your PC to
factory supplied spec. Check your help/paperwork that came with your PC as
to whether you are supposed to create recovery DVD's.

The recovery drive is usually 15gb or less & is not meant to be used for
other than the recovery files.
Backing up to the same drive that contains your o/s is pretty much a waste
of time. If the drive fails so does your backup
Backups should be to a seperate drive/media
