When I go to 'windows update' and click 'change settings' I can't see the
'use microsoft update' check box.

I only have a link 'download updates for other products' in the 'windows
update'-screen. Which takes me to the microsoft update site which gives an
errorcode 0x80070002 .

How do I enable the automatic microsoft updates?

On which OS?

What URL is showing in your Address bar at the end?
E.g. capture it from and English version of IE by pressing Alt-d, Ctrl-c

Also, take note how the URL in the Address bar changes, how the Title
changes and what goes on in the Status bar before then.

FWIW here is what I have in the Address bar finally under IE7 for XPsp2:

http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr....aspx?ln=en-us

(so evidently I'm already using MU.) In order to change it apparently I would
have to click on the Change Settings button in the menu on the left
and then check a box at the bottom of the new frame labeled:
[ ] Disable Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only.

Perhaps you will see something similar?

Make sure that you're not looking at an old cached page. E.g., press Ctrl-F5.

Tell us what you see. Remember, your words have to substitute for what
our eyes might notice...
