How use MS malicious software removal tool?

One of the most recent updates for WinXP is the MS malicious software
removal tool, but how do you use it and does it "duplicate" what McAfee and
Norton probably already do?

I can't seem to find it now under anything like Control Panel > Security
Center or everyday Start > Programs.

When first applying the update, I did see a page with a bar/button that said
something like "Download Malicous Software Removal Tool"... Does that mean
it really "wasn't" part of this security update? Does it add an extra
program somewhere or put an icon on desktop or just operate as a remove
checker software

Thanks

That tool does not replace McAffee or any othrer tool.
It simply runs without installingtaking any malware on on the list with it.
Since it is not installed, there is nothing in programs or any other place.
All that is left may be the log:
C:\Windows\Debug\mrt.log

The FAQ on this link may answer your questions as well:

George,

Here are a couple pages with info you will need.

Windows Update just runs the tool in a similar fashion as the online
MRT(Malicious software Removal Tool). It scans for things like sasser. No
program is actually placed on your PC. You can go and download the MRT.exe
program if you wish to set up a batch file or script to run it on a regular
basis.

Thanks. So basically, the malicious software tool can be obtained and used
as either...

Option 1. An online version that is accessed at
http://www.microsoft.com/malwareremove
and it runs remotely one-time but is never installed on the PC

---or---

Option 2. An executable, installable download from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
that ends up as a Start>Programs application, that can be run "on demand"
anytime someone wants to run it

Is this right... the MS Malicious Software Tool is just an "on demand" tool
from Microsoft, that is updated every Tuesday, to use to find (and delete?)
malware (viruses, spyware, more?),

....and the same things could be done by some combination of McAfee, SpyBot,
etc.?

If so, any opinions as to how well the MS tool works and compares to the
long-timers in the anti-malware industry? Does the MS tool find/delete
*deeper* or different kinds of malware...or pretty much do the same as the
long-timers do.

Thanks

George;
A new version of the tool will be released each month.
The specific problems addresses by this tool will also change monthly based
on what is currently causing the most problems.
By including this tool with Windows Update, I think Microsoft is hoping to
catch a larger #of computers with the problems and then remove the problem.
This tool replaces none of the other tools all computers currently need such
as firewall, antivirus, currency of Windows Updates and an anti spyware
program.

There is really nothing that currently compares to this tool since it is
regularly run and checks for specific threats.
