use of VHD

Two questions about VHD
1. I would like to know if I have made the correct assumption that using the
VHD I would be able to then download sharepoint 2007 or 2010?
2. Do you have to then download a windows server 2003 or 2008 before
downloading sharepoint or is that what the VHD is accommodating?
