It appears there is an illegal version of Windows XP Professional
installed on that computer. To solve the problem, you'll need to
purchase a "FULL VERSION" of Windows XP Professional and
proceed with a "REPAIR INSTALL".

| Hello,
|
| I am in the process of setting up a server based network at our office - in
| adding client computers I am stopped because the service packs will not
| install on a client computer because it does not appear to have a valid
| version of XP installed.
|
| I started the "howtotell" process offered by the microsoft website and
| asked my employer for the install discs to complete the process - the catch!
| The computer was purchased thru e-bay and did not come with any discs.
|
| Do I need to have my employer purchase a full retail version? and will that
| fix the problem? or can he just purchase a license?
|
| Please let me know what options there are in a case like this.
|
| Thanks,
