Hi,
I'm using Vista Home Premium.
If I go 'Computer' and right click the C drive I'm told I have 38GB used. If
I then expand the C drive and highlight all the folders shown and select
'Properties' it tells me just over 28GB used.
I had a problem similar to this some time ago where I was showing over 50GB
discrepancy. I asked on this group and was advised to download David Taylors
excellent 'Showman' utility which I did and it led me to a corrupt recycle
bin. I then, following advice deleted the $RECYCLE.BIN in program files
which was recreated immediately and all was well.
This time though the recycle bin in 'Showman's' pie chart shows zero used.
I've done all the usual things like Disc Cleanup and deleted all but the
last restore point but I still have those 10 GB difference between what
properties on the C drive is telling me is used and what the sum of the
folders within contain which is exactly the same as what 'Showman' tells me.
Where or what is this 10GB discrepancy? I fear malware.
Any idea's? and TIA
Regards,
Alan.

Hi, Alan.

Have you changed the default settings to allow you to see hidden and system
files and folders? (Control Panel | Folder Options | View) How much RAM
does your computer have? Have you turned off hibernation?

On my computer, with 4 GB RAM, the hidden system files C:\pagefile.sys (4
GB) and C:\hiberfil.sys (3+ GB) use almost 8 GB.
