Normally you can set only wmv and mpg video files as desktop background
using DreamScene. You can howewer use ANY video file as a background it
the following way:
1.download and install K-Lite Mega Codec Pack or a codec pack
equivalent.
The first benefit will be tat you can play back practically any kind of
video file with your WMP11.
2. Rename the fi,e you want to use as desktop background .wmv or .mpg
(To do this you have to uncheck "hide extensions of known file types"
in your Fokder Options Menu)
3-Once you have changed the file extension, you'll find "Set as desktop
background"
in its context(right-click) menu.
Set your background and enjoy!
Use avi, mov, mkv or just any kind of file!
Drop a line if you could use this advise please!

Please be aware that old versions of the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack have caused
huge numbers of crashes (millions, if I recall correctly), so it would
behoove anyone who DOES want to use that pirated software to be certain that
they're using the latest version. I cannot stress enough that incompetence
of codec packs are pretty much the #1 source of failure across Windows
multimedia, and according to some early data they're looking like they're
creeping into being a top source of failure across all of Windows.

Recommending codec packs has been and is still a pretty bad plan that is
doing a huge disservice to users. If you mean to suggest some MOV or MKV
filter, it would be better to recommend those discrete components as opposed
to using poorly tested pirate ghoulashes such as K-Lite. KMPC merely
represents a collection of other's work and as such adds little to no
value - and has shown itself to be a source of MASSIVE problems over time
through their lack of quality control. This saddens me. =(

I would advise against installing any Codec Pack. You should install
only the particular codec you need. You are asking for problems when you
install the whole package, which will have many components you don't need.
Personal opinion, that's all.

I would advise everyone to install K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.
The latest version is 3.9 . The package of codecs and direct show
filters has over
7 million downloads and is generally top rated. Please read BetaNews

'FileForum | K-Lite Mega Codec Pack'

I've never met any codec related issue ever since I've installed the
Pack.
Actually Microsoft should deliver Vista and Media Player 11 with all
codecs and filters
needed to play back such popular file formats as mov flv mkv .
When I installed my Vista Ultimate the WMP played back only the sound
of
avi files and there was no image.
Microsofthtt should feel shame about it!!!

I don't get it. I really don't. Most everyone screams for Microsoft to
include something or other into Windows, for convienence sake. Only when
they do, then they get slammed as being uncompetitive.

Do you remember what happened when Microsoft included Internet Explorer
with Windows 98? And more recently, Google took Microsoft to the US
Department of Justice over Windows Desktop Search being included in
Vista. And what about the European Union? If you buy Vista in any of the
EU countries, you don't get Windows Media Player bundled in.

Can you for one second imagine the uproar that will result from
Microsoft including a majority of codecs in the Vista OS? And not to
mention the critics calling Vista bloated for including too many options
that go unused by many.

Personally, I agree with you in saying that MS should include the most
common codecs - but that will never happen because they would be seen
and anti-competitive.

I'd love to get your sources on that information to quote from. Any links?

I've been trying to convince people for years that "Codec Packs" are *bad
news*. People usually install them to get some random video working. They
end up with a ton of crap installed on their system and have no idea what
does what.

If there is something you want to play, it is ALWAYS best to JUST get that
one codec or filter.

Yeah codec packs sucks, but wmp11 also sucks that does not guide you
properly to what codec is needed
for media that you don't have that codec already installed.

Sure there are technologies that can detect missing codecs and lead you to
the proper site to get them.

And don't tell me about the pathetic stupid error pop up wlm gives.. that's
a horrid joke.

I suggest you microsoft boys cut the crap and take a look at gomplayer and
gspot

That depends upon what you're looking for. I put the list at:
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#divx
together to keep track of the "what's currently evil" packs. For K-Lite,
you could step back through their version history, but they're not
particularly honest with their change list - there's nothing along the lines
of "Wow, What Were We Thinking Here?: Stopped Registering the Broken And
Unsupported Indeo/Ligos Audio Codec As Of December..." (which is, if I
recall correctly, when they finally made that particular critical change).

Does that give you a starting point? I also started up a discussion at
Doom9 you could look at, since I figured it would be good to make sure I
wasn't just being biased here.

I think it boils back down to: what did you *really* need? Since you don't
know what the net effects of any further components are, and the codec pack
makers have shown themselves to generally be incompetent when it comes to
testing or validation (and this blithely ignores the fact that most of their
installers are also incompetently generated) -- why would you trust *them*
as opposed to the actual source maker/provider of the codecs in question?

It comes down to me that even if a user really does want to pirate software
here, the codec packs do nothing positive and in fact have done a lot of
negative.

Anyways, this is a huge subject/field, so it's hard to know where to start
when discussing it.

Isn't that just a collection of various pirated software? What's the value
add it gives as opposed to collecting the important and relevant components
individually?

Top rated in terms of analysis, or top rated in terms of "Oh gosh, it solved
my small specific problem by including the kitchen sink - I could have
solved my problem more effectively through simply installing FFDShow Tryouts
but since I was mislead into thinking I needed K-Lite I shall rate them
highly now"?

I guess I too could create a "top rated" codec pack in about an hour or two,
but at least I would be honest about what I was doing and not cause millions
of crashes. Your "7 million downloads" is my "several million crashes".
Please don't fob incompetent software on users. Even though you're ignoring
them ripping off people's work (piracy), it's still a huge disservice to
users to point them to software that has been proven to cause crashes over
time. Let me know when a year has gone by since the latest K-Lite release
hasn't caused problems. Since it's a ghoulash hodge-podge of other people's
work, it usually takes a bit for the problems to shake out. If you were
paying attention to crashes in Windows multimedia (I do), you would have
noticed that there's a been a downward trend since I helped "encourage" them
to fix up one particularly grieviously broken element back in December (this
is an example: there have been many serious problems in their pack over
time). What's currently broken there? Do you know? If you don't, I'd love
for you to stop pushing tripe upon users.

Get the specific codec you need as you need it from the vendor, thus
ensuring stability, safety, and using the latest version. The codec
ecosystem is polluted and unhealthy thanks to codec packs.

> I've never met any codec related issue ever since I've installed the
> Pack.

If this is fully true, you're welcome for my assistance in helping clean up
those packs. If this is partially true (you have not *noticed* the dormant
issues upon your system), then your system is a time-bomb now and you'll be
yelling about awful Windows at some future date and I'll get to go back and
try to solve yet another codec pack based problem.

But you don't really know, do you? There's been no competent level of
technical review or testing of those packs. Believe me, it shows. =\

This isn't your problem. It is their problem, though. I understand you
buying into their snake oil, but selling it further has done massive amounts
of user harm.

> Actually Microsoft should deliver Vista and Media Player 11 with all

This implies an associated scale of development and testing which takes away
from other areas. I am pleased that you think there were large teams of
developers who were twiddling their thumbs and should have been off adding
further distractions. I assure you that the teams were generally busy doing
important stuff. =)

> When I installed my Vista Ultimate the WMP played back only the sound
> of avi files and there was no image.

And you should have clicked the error message's Web Help message and thus
learned what one specific codec you needed and been then pointed out where
to get it from.

I agree that this solution path should be more apparent.

> Microsofthtt should feel shame about it!!!

There's over 800 codecs and tons of file formats. I think you're
oversimplifying the matter. There's supposed to be a healthy ecosystem
here, but codec packs short-circuit and pollute that.

I do feel shame that there's not a better solution for the victims of codec
packs. One important step is education. I'm trying to help with that. I
can't always help get broken codec packs fixed or taken away, but I can help
point out that they're a hideous plan. =\

It's raymundka bitch!
I think I could poke into something very hot! Gettin' answers like
codecs would make Vista OS bloated and K-Lite is pirated and is the
devil itself!
It's more than I expected! why is this theme so hot?
Isn't somethng wrong with the MS approach?
doessn't just truth happen to be on the other side, however painful?
Gates sucks codeck packs work!
