Excuse me for asking a very basic question -
Does Windows Live Mail do Usenet Newsgroups like Outlook Express?
Need to upgrade one PC from Windows XP - user requires Usenet capability "as
close to OE as possible".
Regards and thanks in anticipation.

The latest incantation of WLM handles Usenet poorly. Mozilla Thunderbird
is more alike OE than WLM.

For windows XP you should have no problems because you are not
likely to get WLM 2011!!

However, Microsoft has lost out in Usenet technology and so people
are using Thunderbird or SeaMonkey. SeaMonkey is a complete
package with Browser, Email, NewsReader and Composer.

Incidentally, there is nothing wrong with using Outlook Express as
NewsReader because it [still] does a perfect job!. Nothing has
changed on that front.

It does not. It fumbles long threads. It fails to strip signatures from the
compose window of follow-ups, it does not include a proper signature
separator when posting, it does not proper thread posts by the "References:"
header; relying solely on the "Subject:" line.

That is true; MS has not, nor will they ever, fix the MSOE brokenness in
NNTP. That is why you need to use a third party fix to help MSOE "get it
right" in NNTP: OE-Quotefix.

You don't need long threads when you can trim them down to the bare
minimum. If you want the full history then read the entire thread -
message by message. The purpose of usenets is to covey the message
quickly and succinctly.

I doubt the op is upgrading from XP to XP, thus 'using Outlook Express'
doesn't apply.

The purpose of Usenet is to convey an accurate too!!

It isn't the length of the posts that is the problem. When the number of
"References:" exceeds what MSOE can handle, MSOE chokes. Ten posts of 1 GB
each won't break the way MSOE handles thread, but when the "References:"
header is too long, MSOE chokes (where purpose built NNTP clients just
remove some of the earlier message IDs. The bug is outlined here:

http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#line3

Along with a "work-around" to get past the brokenness.

It absolutely sucks for Usenet. OE was much better.

WLM configures, accesses/retrieves, and sends to nntp newsgroups the same
as OE(xp) and Windows Mail(Vista).
