User accounts lost after SP3 upgrade

After the upgrade to SP3, one of my existing user accounts (I had two)
disappeared from the login/switch user screen. I tried recreating it, but it
said "account already exists." All of the files-- favorites, my documents,
everything-- is still there for this user, there's just no way to access it.
I created a new account with a similar name, then renamed it to the same name
without difficulty, but it is a new account with no link to the
previously-existing one. What do I do now?

I had only one user account. When restarting the computer at the end of the
installation of SP3, there was a message that there weren't sufficient
resources to use the account and that defaults would be used. I don't know
which resources were insufficient. When the machine came up, all of the
settings that I had made did seem to be lost, but the user name was my own.
I don't want to create a new account, I'd like to get back my old settings.
Any suggestions?
