User Folders on Desktop gone

I created two folders on my desktop to keep certain files for my website
and another for personal files.

Last night, I was trying to see some files that I thought were hidden
in another folder (unrelated to my folders) and I went to properties
and chose Properties,Attributes and checked "HIDDEN".

The computer done something and when it was done, My profile name was
no longer there but I was still logged in to my desktop. It was then
that I noticed that my two user created folders were gone and where they
were, was empty. There were some pictures that were recenty viewed from
one of these folders. I can go to RECENT ITEMS and mouse over the file
name and it shows: C:\Users\John\
Desktop\John (John is my name )) When I go to Windows Explorer and
follow this file path from My Computer, it's not there.

I have other graphics for my website in some folders and some videos in
the other that I cannot find. I also, cannot seem to find the SEARCH
function to search for files/folders in Vista.

Does anyone have any ideas what I have done. OH, I did do a System
Restore to an earlier date/time when they were there but they (the
folders) are still not showing up.

Maybe on a different note, I also noticed that the 4 or 5 bookmarks
that I had in Favorites is no longer there but when I go to one of the
sites manually and then Save as Favorite, it shows that there is already
one there and asking if I want to overwrite it.

You might have checked the hidden property of either the C:\Users or
C:\Users\John or C:\Users\John\AppData folder. So the desktop, favorites,
personal documents and profile are gone. To retrieve them, you can uncheck
the hidden check box on the properties dialog box of either folders. To find
those folders, you can use Control Panel-> Appearance and
Personalization->Folder Options. Then on the View tab, select Show hidden
files and folders. After that you will see them in Windows Explorer.

Sorry, should be the C:\Users or the C:\Users\John folder. AppData does not
include your desktop and the favorites.

Donald, I had already checked that and the circle is marked to show
hidden folders.

My folders are still not there. Here is the the file path for one of
the documents:
C:\Users\John\Desktop\John

I can follow: C:\Users\John\Desktop but when I get there, there is no
"John" under that.

The folders WERE under: C:\Users\John\Desktop\Website Files (website
files being the name of the folder on the desktop. and
C:\Users\John\Desktop\John (<John being the folder name on the desktop.

I can still pull the files up by using the SEARCH using title names or
Recent Items function but I do not physically see the folders. It's like
they are hidden but the check box is not checked.

Hi John,

Thank you for the explanation. I can see that happens after you change the
attributes of some other file folders.

'Last night, I was trying to see some files that I thought were hidden
in another folder (unrelated to my folders) and I went to properties
and chose Properties,Attributes and checked "HIDDEN".'

So where are those files located? Did you have any foder redirection or
roaming profile configured on your machine? If your machine is not on a LAN,
you might don't have to worry about right-clicking on your C:\Users and
choose properties, and then check and uncheck the hidden check box and then
apply the change to the folder and all the subfolders. You can do the same
to the Windows folder.
