This has probably been asked asked and answered before but I can't find
any info on this. My saved documents icons on the desktop i.e. dot
file, the icon is not the standard windows icon, its an image of the
document itself. How do you control this behaviour? Its not just
word, all my adobe files show an image of the document itself.

I would like to set at least some of them back to the standard format
in particular my dot files.
