I just received my HP laptop back from HP who resolved some warranty covered
issues and installed a new system. They assigned both user name and computer
name "hptest". I changed both - but the problem is that even though I
changed administrator to "myname", the user folder in the users folder still
says hptest. There appears to be no way to change that folder name and I'd
like to do it before I move all my data back.

The "blue folder name" at the root level changed to "myname". However the
folder in the users folder didn't change. I've restarted several times.
The actual user profile indicates the name is "myname/hptest". However the
only place where I can change user names doesn't show that so I can't change
it. Any suggestions?

You can't change it. Create a new User with the name you want.

BTW it is bad practice to run on a day-to-day basis as an administrator.
Password-protect the administrator account and create a Standard User
account for daily use...

The only way to change the folder name for a user is to create a new user
and copy the setting from old to new.

Create the new user, Restart. Logon to an admin account (You have to be
using a third party admin user account to copy a profile.)

Then you open Control panel/System/Advanced System Settings (see tasks
pane)/Advanced Tab, User profiles-Settings button.

You highlight the old user account, and click the Copy To button, and select
the new user you had previously created.

Restart, and log onto the new account to test.

I tried this but now am in an endless cycle. At the login screen with three
users I click on a user - it processes with the welcome screen for about
five minutes then returns to the login screen. There seems to be no way to
get into the computer at all now.

Press F8 during the 'black screen' just after the BIOS screen of a restart.

Run "Safe Mode With Command Prompt", and run this command:

%systemroot%\system32\rstrui.exe

to choose a restore point.

After using system restore, you can use this alternative method to create a
copy of your profile:

Thanks for the help. It has taken hours, but worth it to get it right! Now
I have the admin account I want, though, I get messages that I don't have
access to many of the folders I want to copy my data too. It appears I have
all privileges????

You will need to 'take ownership', as an admin.

(It works in Vista, just like this article says for XP)
