I use a laptop with WXP for 3 years. This bit might be a coincidence, however
following a windows update via the web, on restarting my laptop a message
appeared to tell me that my user profile couldn't be found and a new one was
being created. So now I am a new user on my laptop and can't access any
previous history, documents, pictures, e mail etc. I tried the system restore
to a time before the update, didn't work.

How can I get access to my files on the hard drive? I have backed up over
the years, so no major issues, just the major inconvenience of starting all
over again and mainly not being able to reach my e mails awaiting answer in
the last couple of weeks. It is my main machine for business. Also lost
access to some valuable software downloaded form web.

Hi ,

Go into the Control Panel or bring up Explore. Go into Folder Options.
Click on View. Dot Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck Hide protected
operating system files (Recommended). Click Apply then click OK.

You should see your other Identities on the computer. Don't delete from
Explore. You should be able to use User Profiles on the Advanced Tab in
System Properties, if more than one User is listed.

You can copy the My Documents files and sub-folders to your new User ID.
The same for Favorities. You need to Import your E-mails and Address Book,
thou.
