Recently, I tried to create a new account on my home desktop, but when I
tried to log on, it gave me the error : The User Profile Service service
failed to log on. User profile could not be opened.
I did some googling and found a thread here on these forums about a
related issue, however, none of the solutions applied to me.
I did some more digging around in my computer, and found that although
the new account was appearing on the log on screen, there was no folder
associated with the account under C:/Users. The new account did not
appear in the registry under ProfileList, and when I dug into Advanced
Account Management, the new account's profile, unsurprisingly, was not
listed there.
And just to clarify, there was no ".bak" suffix on any of the registry
entries, and all the values were as they should be. The main point is
that the entry for that new account didn't even exist.
I tried deleting the account and recreating it, but that didn't do
anything. So I thought that I would simply modify an existing account
instead. I took an existing account and changed it from an administrator
to a standard user.
Windows then deleted that account's profile folder as well, and removed
all instances of it from the registry. So now, it too appears on the log
on screen, but I receive the same error when I log on.
I've tried a system restore (which failed; I will have to try again)
and if it comes down to it I will do a clean installation, but I would
really prefer to avoid that as I don't have an external hard drive big
enough to store everything I have and I don't want to have to offload
everything onto DVDs.
I only have one profile per account, so that can't be the source of the
problem.
Any ideas? Please help!
