Hi,

Migration from NT 4.0 to Windows 2003 AD ( ADMT V 2.0 )
Already Migrated 15 users but,
I have like 30 users which are members of 10 different groups. I would like
to migrate 30 users with same group membership from NT 4.0 to Windows 2003
AD.

is that true ? I need to migrate group first if yes, then in ADMT do I need
to select copy user option.

If I select copy user option then Do I need to run the User migration wizard
again?

Please suggest the way. First group migration or Users or both at same time

I would really appriciate your help

Thanks,

Sachin Desai

Hello Joe,

Good to hear from you.

According to the message, I understand that you have some concerns about
the users and group migration in ADMT. Please correct me if I am off base.

I would like to suggest that we migrate group first, and then user. Please
do not migrate groups and users together.

Each group type has different rules for membership and serves a different
purpose. This affects the order that the groups are migrated from the
source to the target domains. Universal groups can contain members from any
domain in the forest and replicate group membership to the global catalog.
For this reason, they can be used for administrative groups. When you
restructure domains, it is recommended to migrate universal groups first.

In addition, it is recommended that we migrate the groups and users
separately (do not migrate the associated members when migrating groups).

During the group migration, please use the following configurations

[Group Options]

Copy group members * Not Checked
Fix membership of group * Checked

During the user migration, please use the following configurations:

[User Options]

Migrate associated user groups * Not Checked
Fix users' group memberships * Checked

If the groups have previously been migrated, choosing the above options
will update the group memberships during the user migration.

You may test the migration and check the result.

Hope this helps. If you have further concerns, please get in touch.

Best regards,

Frances He

Many many thanks. Really useful

- One more question. I have many users with Visual Basic 6.0 and Crystal
report V 8.0 version installed on their machine. If I migrate their user ID /
Computer from Nt 4.0 domain to Windows 2003 domain. what would happen to VB
and Crystal report. Any Idea can be very useful

Thanks in advance

Hello Joe,

Thanks for the update.

I understand that you want to know the result if migrating the users with
Visual Basic 6.0 and Crystal report V 8.0 version from Nt 4.0 domain to
Windows 2003 domain. I am not sure of the result because ADMT is not
supposed to migrate the settings in specific applications. If the settings
are included in the user profiles, then we can use ADMT to migrate them. I
would like to suggest that you test to migrate a user and check the effect.

The following links have addressed the details to translate the local user
profiles:

Translating Local User Profiles
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../library/DepKi
t/e9197ee7-d959-4b00-aff4-19b575ba2856.mspx

Remigrating User Accounts and Workstations in Batches
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../library/DepKi
t/bddd8c2a-189c-4904-a089-14483e48b0ce.mspx

As for the "Translate Objects", I have offered the meaning of each item in
another post to you. Please choose these items based on your need. If you
want to migrate the local profiles, you can choose it. Then ADMT will
translate the security on the user profiles that exist on the migrated
computer. It would be best to test it and make sure of the whole process.

Hope this helps. Since the last post appears to be another new issue
regarding computer migration, if you have further concerns, I would like to
suggest that you open a new post so that we can help you on it in a more
efficient manner. Please understand that our newsgroup is an issue based
service, meaning we usually respond to one question/issue per post. This
way, we can keep the thread clean.

Your understanding on this will be greatly appreciated!

Best regards,
