Does anyone know how to set up the "insert key" in MS Word (Vista), to be
used as a paste function? I know in other versions of Word, it was something
like Tools, Options, Use Insert Key for Paste. Thanks!

Hi Sankee--

You mean Word 2007 because besides MSFT's joint marketing Bltizs, Word 2007
is separate from Vista.

I strongly suggest that you checkout all the ways to use the clipboard by
going to Word 2007 helpa at http://office.microsoft.com

You can easily paste from the clipboard:

To paste items one at a time, in the Clipboard task pane, double-click each
item that you want to paste.
To paste all the items that you copied, in the Clipboard task pane, click
Paste All.

But that's not what you asked me so here goes

Symptoms
You want to insert text from another document into the document that you are
working on, but you can't find the Insert File command.

Cause
The Insert File command has been renamed Text from File and moved to the
Object menu on the Insert tab in Microsoft Office Word 2007.

Resolution
Use the Insert tab to access the Text from File command.

Use the Insert tab to access the Text from File command.

Insert text from another file
Click where you want to insert the text.
On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click the arrow next to Object, and
then click Text from File.
In the Insert File dialog box, locate the file that you want, and then
double-click it.
____

I don't know how or if you can set up an insert key in Word 2007. I'd think
you could, but it's not

To configure Word to use the Insert key for pasting:

Within Word, click Options from the Tools menu.
Click the Edit tab.
Select the box beside the Use the INS key for paste option.
Click OK.

If this is not what you want, try one of the MSFT Word groups:

microsoft.public.word.newusers

answers questions that are far from just for newbies. Go to the newsgroup
button on your Win Mail toolbar and click on that group and subscribe.

Good luck,

Sankee--

I was at the place where you do this but I missed it. Here's what I should
have answered:

Office Button | Word Options | Advanced | check the
"Use the Insert key for paste" box | OK. But turning on this option
automatically turns off the "Use the Insert key to control overtype
mode" option in the same dialog. So you need to decide whether it is
more important to you to use the Insert key for pasting or for toggling
between insert and overtype modes.

I went to the Word group to get a more refined answer though I had the place
where you do this but not the full consequences.

Some additional explanation on what happens when you check the box from
Suzanne Barnhill, Word MVP:

"You won't notice that you're in Overtype mode as long as you're creating
new
text, but if you start typing in the middle of existing text, what you type
will overwrite the text to the right of it. Ordinarily the Insert key
toggles between this and the normal Insert mode. If you assign the Insert
key to the Paste command, you can still double-click OVR on the status bar
to toggle between Insert and Overtype (or use the Options setting)."
