Using the onboard sound driver

Like many people I've been having problems with a Creative sound card running
under Vista. It all starts well but soon deteriorates into pops, crackles and
stutter. A suggestion in a previous posting suggested I use the onboard
driver (a SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio). This shows up in Device Manager
and is enabled, but doesn't appear in the list of playback devices under
Control Panel > Sound, so there doesn't seem to be any way to activate it.

Can anyone tell me how, and will it make a difference?

In the list of playback devices in the Sound control panel, try right
clicking and allowing the display of disabled devices.

Have you right clicked on an empty area of the Playback window (and Recording
window) and checked both "Show Disconnected Devices" and "Show Disabled
Devices"?

Hi Simon,

I see that you have a sound card and that your motherboard also has built in
sound. It sounds (no pun intended) that you might have a resource conflict,
especially when you say that the built in device appears in Device Manager.
What you need to do is to disable on-board audio from your BIOS and then
download and install the latest Creative drivers from the website
(www.creative.com/suppport/vista). Follow the directions on the site. Note
that there may not be a driver available for your card, in which case you
might like to remove the card and reenable the on board audio in your BIOS
and use that instead whilst you wait for a driver to become available. Check
the website regularly for this. When one does become available, reinstall
your card, disable the on-board audio in your BIOS, download the driver and
your problem should, hopefully, be solved.
