Hi,

My son has a computer running XP Pro at his mums and Vista Ultimate at my
place. Both are running the same version of windows live messenger,
14.0.8064.206 (I think).

He is trying to use special characters in his tage line. Specifically a
double headed arrow which magnifies the following characters. He can enter
the arrow, and people can see the magnified icons on XP, Vista, and even
someone using Windows 7. But, on his XP computer, all he sees for the arrow
is a an empty square box (which means the character is untranslatable?). The
same problem occurs on his brothers XP computer at his mums, but both work
perfectly on their Vista computers at my place. Regardless of which computer
they are using, people the comminucate with see the desired result
(magnified emoticons).

I looked at regional settings, code pages, tried copying and pasting from
Character map. Nothing works.

Anyone know why the arrow is not displaying correctly on his XP machine?

thanks

Hi,

Yes the same thing happened to me. But with the previous version of WLM 8.1
it wsa fixed easily just by installing Japanese font support.

this is the example my my display name special character: ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Before the stars would appeear in squares but after I installed the
approriate font support ie. Japanese font support. The stars would all
appeared.

But ONCE i was force to UPGRADE to the new WLM ver. 2009 The problem
RE-APPEARED again and cant be solved till TODAY!!.

Yes it is annoying and knowing by the fact that they forced us to upgrade
with a version of WLM that consist lots and lots or issues.

Good luck.

Hi

Thanks for your response. I'm seeing lots of posts about problems with WLM
since M$'s forced upgrade. Perhaps it is time to use a 3rd party product and
stop using M$.

thanks

Tanya,

This is what I get from the official Windows Live Technical Support site.
Hope it helps you:

Hello Abraham,

Thank you for contacting Windows Live Messenger Technical Support. My name
is Samantha and I'll be glad to assist you with your concern.

Based on the information that you provided us, I understand that you are
unable to use special characters/fonts in your display name in after
upgrading to Windows Live Messenger 2009. You mentioned that you were able to
use Japanese, Chinese and even East Asian font languages in Windows Live
Messenger 8.1. I understand how inconvenient this must be for you. Allow me
to clarify this to you.

Abraham, this is more likely the same as you can input English characters
only when you chat by using Windows Live Messenger even though you have a
non-English Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) installed in a Windows
XP-based computer. If you select a different language, you cannot input the
characters in that language. This issue occurs in the latest version of
Windows Live Messenger (version 2009).

To further help you with this matter, please visit
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961503 and check the update.

If this information does not resolve or apply to the issue that you have
submitted, please reply to this e-mail and include any additional information
that you feel may be helpful in resolving your issue.

Thank you for contacting Windows Live Messenger Technical Support. Have a
great day.

Sincerely,

Samantha
