I've heard a lot of speculation on Vista and that XP is still much better in
the long run. I'm going to be buying a laptop and right now, Vista is much
cheaper to buy as an upgrade on the system, than having the laptop come with
XP for some reason, probably promotional. Should I use Vista since it's
cheaper? I've never tested Vista before, only seen pictures that show that
it's looks prettier. Any suggestions? Thanks.

While XP has points in its favor, it is fading. Vista is the MS O/S du
jour.

A properly configured, Vista-capable system runs fine, and has built-in
security protections not found natively in its predecessor. They may be
annoying, but less so than the nasties that they may help the average
user avoid.

Yes, you should use Windows Vista. Windows XP is an old
operating system that is approaching the end of its supported
life cycle. Vista was designed to support today's modern
hardware and also is far more secure than Windows XP.

Alright, thanks. Can someone also tell if Vista's performance will outclass
XP so to speak in the near future? I hear that even with SP1 that Vista is
not as performance capable as XP at the moment. Is there any hopes of Vista
ever being more capable?

You'll get different opinions from different people. Here's mine:

If you're buying a new computer, get it with Vista. It works fine, and
it's the platform for future growth. It makes no sense to buy
yesterday's operating system.

On the other hand, if you were asking whether to upgrade an existing
XP computer to Vista, I would advise you to do so only if you needed
to.

If you do get Vista, be aware that it has much greater hardware
requirements than XP. If you get a machine with a minimal
configuration, you will undoubtedly be disappointed in its
performance. In particular, be sure to get at least 2GB of RAM.

Define "secure". Is that anything like "stable"? Vista has so many
apparent bugs, there must be a plethora of exploitative viruses in the
works. I am still getting security and other updates for my Windows 2000
and XP systems, and I don't think "the end of their supported life cycle" is
anywhere in sight. I am seriously thinking of "downgrading" my new Dell
laptop to XP...

Cheers,

Earle

DON'T GET VISTA!!!

It is a nightmare of USB problems, and completely annoying "security"
features which are not even compatible with Microsoft own products.

Vista will make obsolete loads of your perfectly good software library and
hardware - it will all be dismissed as "legacy" software/hardware, even
though it may only be a couple of years old and may have cost you a lot of
money.
