Hi,
Does anybody have any experience with setting up Raid5 on a Windows
2008 Server win non-identical drives using the Disk Management
utility
within Computer Management? I have always used hardware raid in the
past with completely identical drives. I have a home system with
four
1.5TB drives, two Seagate drives, and two Western Digital drives.
I’ve listed the specs below.
Seagate ST31500341AS
Interface SATA 3Gb/s
Cache 32MB
Capacity 1.5TB
Spin Speed 7,200 RPM
Average latency 4.16ms
Random read seek time <8.5ms
Western Digital WD15EADS
Interface SATA 3Gb/s
Cache 32MB
Capacity 1.5TB
Spin Speed 7,200 RPM
Average latency 4.17ms
Random read seek time <8.9ms
The fact that these are non-identical drives, and that the latency
and
seek times are different, makes me hesitant to create a four drive
raid5 set with these drives. That said it would be very convenient
and economical for me to be able to raid5 these drives. Has anybody
used Windows software Raid with non-identical drives? Is this a safe
thing to do, or am I asking for trouble?
Thanks,
John
