V.6 Automatic Updates fail with 0x80070005

Running Windows XPSP2. I am unable to automatically install the updates from
the Windows Update site on my computer.

The updates are found and displayed, but when I click the update button, I
see something along the lines of

"Downloading updates.......... ......... failed!"

The updates history says the failure is 0x80070005, which I believe is an
Access Denied error of some kind. The updates install manually just fine, so
I am fully patched. I run a virus scan almost daily, as well as two
different spyware solutions, Spyware Blaster, which sets the kill bit on
known ActiveX malware, and the popular Spybot Search and Destroy util.

I've researched this as follows for more than two months without solving the
problem:

Registry permissions on the Windows Update key have been checked.

NTFS permissions on each drive's WUTemp folder have been checked.

Automatic Updates service is Started - Automatic. BITS service is started
and set to manual; if set to automatic, it remains started after the failure
but reverts to manual. Not sure if that is a problem.

Here is what I believe to be the important part of my last attempt from
Windowsupdate.log, timestamps removed to improve readabilty:

DnldMgr ** START ** DnldMgr: Downloading updates [CallerId = WindowsUpdate]
....
Agent * Title = Cumulative Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP...
....
DtaStor WARNING: Update Service: Failed to update backup store
....
Handler Updateci: WinSEUpdateHandler::_Inventory: Installer returned 0x5 (5)
Handler FATAL: UH: 0x80070005: Inventory failed
Handler FATAL: UH: 0x80070005: GetNextRequiredFiles failed
Handler FATAL: UH: 0x80070005: GetRequiredFilesForSandboxState failed
DnldMgr FATAL: DM:CAgentDownloadManager::GenerateAllDownloadReque sts:
GenerateDownloadRequest failed with 0x80070005.

Google shows several people having this issue, like me, having tried all the
KB's and other advice without success.

Hi,

Did you try reading this KB article :
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=13&ln=en

It talks about a solution for your issue. Hope it helps.

From: Not spending any more time than I have already. --

I have the same problem so I won't say it over again.

I have spend three full days with microsoft tech people and I loss three
full days plus one phone call on my cell that cost me 77.00. I kept being
transferred from person to person, left on hold for quite awhile, and with
all of that, they still did not solve the problem.

Do either of you have a problem with windows installer? You can even
research it on google. I thought I had it fixed for awhile but it came back
with a vengence. I had already installed the program they had asked for. I
kept it on the desktop and have reinstalled it many times with the differnet
HP software that I have. It still comes back and that is when I started
having trouble with down loading the updates. Out of 180 software updates, I
only had 17 that downloaded. I can download them but cannot install which
kind of mades sense that windows installer may be the problem. Perhaps I
stumbled onto something. And as for the XPSP2, I purchased it along with
other updates for Winoows XP from a software store. That certainly was the
right way to go if your going to install the XPSP2 update at all. In addition
I also have the spyware that you have plus other utilities from Panda and
AFG. Did you say you had Adware from Lovasoft besides Spybot and Destroy?

Looking forward to hearing from you. Classact1

Thank you for reading my email.

IE hangs when you click " Install Updates " ? Check the
WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory for an associated
error code for the date that you attempted to update, Terry.
Post back with the error code or copy&paste the section containing it.

Hmmm .... I've tried out to find a solution.... Not succesful, I have 31
security updates pending on my XP SP2 and the Update download fails (0x5). I
haven't got it to work although I spent a lot of time on this. An example of
the failure is as follows from the WindowsUpdate.log:

DnldMgr *********** DnldMgr: New download job [UpdateId =
{A13230F5-0B6A-4857-9E4E-6B5FC174A319}.100] ***********
DnldMgr * Queueing update for download handler request generation.
DnldMgr Generating download request for update
{A13230F5-0B6A-4857-9E4E-6B5FC174A319}.100
Handler Windows Patch download for UpdateId =
{A13230F5-0B6A-4857-9E4E-6B5FC174A319}: selected action is download express
(delta).
Handler Updateci: WinSEUpdateHandler::_Inventory: Installer returned 0x5 (5)
Handler FATAL: UH: 0x80070005: Inventory failed
Handler FATAL: UH: 0x80070005: GetNextRequiredFiles failed
Handler FATAL: UH: 0x80070005: GetRequiredFilesForSandboxState failed
DnldMgr FATAL: DM:CAgentDownloadManager::GenerateAllDownloadReque sts:
GenerateDownloadRequest failed with 0x80070005.
DnldMgr Error 0x80070005 occurred while downloading update; notifying
dependent calls.

What is that about?

Grateful for tips!

(I can download and install new updates but not those damned 31). Is this a
authority problem? I have checked, but it didn't help....

Best regards / Axel

I had the same problem, when I would go to windows update the site would tell
me Active -X was used. I went to http://pcpitstop.com/ today and clicked on
"Check ActiveX. After downloading their program I went back to windows
update and I was able to get all my updates. Hope This helps someone, because
I've had this problem since about thr first of August.
