I was getting this error scanning for updates (XP Home, NIS 2004). Ran
Norton Live Update today to make sure I had the most recent updates from
them. Same error. I followed the suggestion in previous posts of manually
configuring internet access in NIS for MS Generic Host Process for Win32
Services and also anything called Windows Update. I set them to "Permit
All". This fixed the problem but I don't like having to have to do this.
Previous settings were for "Automatic" configuration by NIS which should have
worked. Either Microsoft or Symantec should get their stuff figured out.

BTW, SP2 is still only available for automatic update which I have turned
off until I feel more confident that it won't kill my computer.
