V5 install hanging

Is there a way to manually install V5 update software.
On a XP Home machine when I visit the Windows Update
website, I get the message that it is checking for the
current version of the update software and then nothing
else ever happens. I rolled back the update software by
downloading the v4 cab file so that when I go to the
website I get the 'install now' option, and when I click
on the 'install now' it displays 'Registering 100%' and
then never continues on. I have tried all the different
help/faq suggestions on the windows update site with no
change in the behaviour.
