v5 scan for update error 0x80072EFD due to firewall

I recently upgraded Windows Update from v4 to v5.

When I click to start scanning for updates, the progress bar works for about 15 seconds then dumps me in the Error number: 0x80072EFD page. The suggested solutions do not work.

I am running Norton Internet Security 2003 which appears to be preventing it from completing. When I disable the firewall service, Windows Update performs all tasks successfully. The rules in NIS haven't changed since the update from v4 and default Microsoft rules are still listed.

My firewall logs do indicate issues but am still looking for the solution.

Anyone got some thoughts on this? I haven't been able to locate information connecting issues with the new update and a firewall yet.

Thanks.

I have found that this error is cause by the 'Firewall' preventing (Blocking)
access to the 'Microsoft Generic Host Process for Win32 Services' (svchost).
By changing it from 'Blocked' to 'Permit all', in the Firewall Programme,
the windows updater works perfectly.

................. I am using NIS2004

As of 9/20/04, there has been no update, at least available via Live
Update, to fix this, at least for NPF '02 on XP Pro sp1.

Manually creating the rule works.
