I have installed XP SP2 and when attempting to access windows update I get
[Error number: 0x800A01AD].

The suggested fix relating to "This error message may occur if you have
insufficient permissions to the Windows Update registry keys. " does not
work.

I see in System events a DCOM event 10010

"The server {E60687F7-01A1-40AA-86AC-DB1CBF673334} did not register with
DCOM within the required timeout."

Can anyone shed some light?

Hi Mike,

Please try the following.

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type regsvr32 wuaueng.dll.
4. Click OK.

Thanks for reply David - but this suggestion did not work.

I note also that I cannot start the BITS service.

The error I get on trying to starts BITS is:

"The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with
service-specific error 2147952506 (0x8007277A).

Hi

Disable any anti-virus product and see if that helps.

If not, disable any firewall and see if that helps.

Hi Torgeir

Disabling antivirus (nod32) and Microsoft firewall does not solve the
problem.

Reset the ACL on the BITS service and see if it helps:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP12.phx.gbl

(the sc sdset bits "DA;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCR...." part in the lonk above)

Hi Torgeir

I was able to reset the ACL on BITS sucessfully but I still cannot start the
BITS service.

What else can I try?

Hi

It might be a NOD32 issue, here is another person that had this
error (see text in yellow a bit down), he solved the problem by
uninstalling NOD32:
