I am unable to update my WinXP SP1 install at all.
Further, the dates for the fialed install of the updates
is July 16, 2004 even though I've just ran it moments ago.
Before anyone trys to be a wise-*ss, my system date and
time are valid!
I think there is a serious flaw or bug in this new update
engine.... look at all the problems posted in this
group!?!

Notice how there's no MVP's responding to our posts about
bugs in WU V5? Perhaps indicative of a problem MS doesn't
yet know how to fix.

I was thinking the same thing. Everyone on this Newsgroup
seems knowledgeable enough to at least come here for help
and they can't get it fixed! Just think of all the people
at home who aren't quite as computer literate resetting
their machines when they get stuck at downloading 0%. They
may not have a clue where to turn for help. This may be a
much bigger problem than anyone realizes. Hopefully
someone at MS is looking into this and not just pointing
their finger away from themselves.

Maybe we can work together and figure something out. My
configuration is:
Win XP SP2 (the problem began before SP2 though)
Adelphia Cable Internet
AOL Broadband over Adelphia Cable
Norton Internet Security

Any similarities to your configuration?
Here is the end of my c:\windows\WindowsUpdate text file

Copy/paste the following link into an IE Addressbar and click GO, then
copy/paste the results into your reply:

http://aumha.org/mydetail.htm

Example:
~~~~~~~~
Browser Name: Microsoft Internet Explorer ver. 6.0
Browser & OS: (Major & Minor Version Information)
4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768
Color Depth: undefined
Java Enabled: true
~~~~~~~~~

Any difference if you disable NIS entirely?

Are you accessing Windows Update using Internet Explorer?

Yes. I have tried disabling NIS by right clicking the
icon in the toolbar then choosing disable.

>Are you accessing Windows Update using Internet Explorer?

I've tried from IE and I have WU in my Start menu of
recently accessed programs.

I also noticed that once I try to install an update and
fail, I can't try it again until I delete the
SoftwareDistribution folder. Before I can delete that I
have to change Automatic Windows Update to manual and
reboot so AU does not come up. I also noticed that if I
don't STOP AU using Services.msc my Reboot restart will
never complete. I have to hit reset. If I STOP AU first
(actually it always fails (times out) during the STOP) my
reboot will be clean. So something in AU is hosed
somewhere.

What updates do you (or Windows Update) think need to be installed? (You
are posting from the problem machine, right?)

So, disabling NIS does or does not make a difference?

There are 2 critical updates listed but based on some of
the posts here I think I'll wait. They are GDI detection
tool and .net framework SP1. I want to get this working
for when I really do want to install an update. Windows
Update is a nice feature verses going to the MS website
and downloading fixes. My point of being in this forum is
that when I select an update to install (I used Win Media
Player as a test), It just hangs at 0% saying that it's
now downloading installing updates. This all started with
V5 of WU while I was still on SP1. Yes, This is the
problem machine.

No, it made no difference. I would have taken this up
with Symantec if that were the case.

Thanks for the reply. I will be away most of this morning
and will check back later this afternoon (Eastern Time).

I haven't seen any documentation on how to read these things
but FWIW there is quite a bit here which lends to some simple
experimenting.

My first take would be that the log doesn't show anything wrong.
I would say that there is an update in progress. Let's look at it from
that point of view.

Let's start by looking at a timestamped record as an example.

> 2004-09-16 22:06:02-0400 1120 ba0 WU client
> executing call {149954BF-C6B1-4358-A8F0-FC5F94F0F7AD} of

(I think that those 3 lines were originally parts of a single record?)
I suspect that the third parameter (1120 in this case) is your PID
of your the svchost.exe which runs wuauserv.

Test that idea with this command:
tasklist /svc /fi "PID eq 1120"

If that idea works out try to figure out what the other non-1120
records represent. I suspect that one of them is going to be
another svchost.exe which runs BITS. In that case, if that
service is still running you may be able to interrogate the status
of its jobs using the bitsadmin command. Also, if it is really
running as the only service in that process you could use
Task Manager and its statistics (especially the I/O ones)
to see if it has done/is doing anything.

Note: this sort of diagnosis is rather speculative since I haven't
actually had to do it for myself yet; so if you are seeing something
different than what I am imagining please reply with your detailed
observations.
