I needed to update explorer from 5.5 to V6, when I did it the download said
succesful and rebooted but when i went back to the updates it came up that it
need to be installed, so when i tried to install it again it comes up that
there is already one pending and that i have to reboot again so i do but
nothing changes. I hope someone can make sense of this. Im using Windows ME.

Easy enough to fix. Go to Control Panel | Folder Options. Put a
check next to " Show hidden files and folders ", click Apply,
then OK.
Create a folder on the desktop and name it IEBak. Using Windows
Explorer, navigate to
Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information
Move all of the files in that folder to IEBak.
DO NOT DELETE THE FOLDER.

Install IE6 now.
NOTE: It's best to temporarily disable your antivirus software
during IE's installation. After the install is finished, do not
forget to reenbable it.

IF IE installs, delete IEBak and it's contents.
If it doesn't, move all of the files back to
Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information

I am also attempting IE6sp1 install on Win Me.

Your suggestion did not work for me. I could not see the control panel -
Unexpected Error. I finally did get to see the control panel two hours
later, after doing some newsgroup reading on another machine, and trying
fixes, (in order to see the control panel, I had to "disable web content in
folder.") I was able to try a repair with the Add Remove programs Microsoft
Internet Explorer 6sp1 button. Says Unable to Repair - reinstall. I did a
full install again with all of the files downloaded onto the local machine,
same thing.

I have IE6 (at least I think it is IE6), but cannot see the information
on>help>about. An "unexpected error" comes up. I am still unable to get to
my home page - an IE Send Error Report window pops up and I can't get past
it unless I set the home page to blank.

I am at a dead end. Do you have any other ideas, Mow?

Peter,

Try doing a Repair of IE in Safe Mode first.
If no joy, and it appears as if you have the entire IE6 setup package
already downloaded, attempt to install it from within Safe Mode.
Often times you will get error messages using IE if the system has
spy | ad | malware on it. Have you scanned the system for their
presence ?

Have you ever reinstalled ME over itself with IE6 already installed?
