I have had my XP Pro since I bought my PC, at that time you did not get a
windows disk,it was pre-loaded. Now auto-update tried to update my system so
I can use the new auto-update and when it loads I get. Your XP Key is
invalid and we cannot Validate your copy. I was told I had to pay for
another copy of XP pro. (B**l S***) I paid for every piece of software I
own, from Office 2k to every game I own. I have no pirated software. I even
went to TechNet and gave then support reference numbers from past help with
this same copy (to show it has a history on this PC) What do I do??? I did
open a new support ticket with support (I was not charged for the past help
since I fixed the problem myself) so I was told this ticket was also free of
service charge, something does not sound right. I will say this, the major
PC reseller who sold me this PC put an Enterprise copy of XP pro on my
PC.( again I was told was ok at the time I bought this PC that this was how
Microsoft did it at that time), is this what is causing my problem???

Thanks

A. Probably since an "Enterprise" version is really a "Volume License" version
and is not for resale to individual users like yourself. Your supplier should
only have installed either a "Retail Version" or a "OEM Version" and given you
the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) and the genuine Windows XP CD.

Read the following:

Carey
Enterprise copies should be able to be validated.

To tell if you have a Volume Licensing Key version installed

Right-click "My Computer" > Properties

Have a look at the Product ID displayed there, which is something like

55198-123-2211903-45017 (made up)
Format is A-B-C-D
Look at the last section - section D. If the first 2 digits are "23" or
"45" then it is a Volume Licensing Key.

So the above made-up key would be a VLK version.

Yes it is a 23. The Vendor has agreed to give me an OEM copy of XP Pro
Approved by Microsoft. Am I going to be able to change the key without
reinstalling XP? Someone said I was in for trouble to correct this problem
because I had to reinstall.

You cannot simply change the Product Key. You need to
perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP CD
and the Product Key that comes with it.

Hmm, I beg to differ.
Oem keys can be changed to oem keys.
Retail key can be changed to retail keys.
Volume License keys can be change to Volume license keys.
Some Volume license keys can be change to an oem key.

I wouldn't be surprised if all could be changed to a Volume License
key. The reason I say Microsoft has to disable activation when the
support ends or could end facing a bunch of small claim court
lawsuits.

See this web site for info on how to do a key change.
http://www.angelfire.com/in4/computertips/key.html

I would always try the key change first before doing a repair install.
Instead of having to reinstall bunch of stuff.

My problem is I own the copy that the vendor sold me. I am sure most of you
remember the days they refused to give you the CD. I have another copy but I
want my orig. key validated again I PAID FOR IT. and I PAID THE UPGRADE
PRICE FOR THE NEW KEY. I will let you know what happens tomorrow when MS
calls tomorrow. I miss Dos 5.0 and 6
