Validation Failure: Invalid Product Key[0x80080222]

I've been having problems with my computer, so I updated it. Windows Update
tells me that I need to validate my copy of XP. So I ran the new validation,
and it worked smoothly. My problems continued, and my system was very
unstable. I wiped out this machine, and I decided to wipe out my Windows
98SE machine as well. This 98 machine is actually better hardware, and so I
moved XP down there.

Now when I update this machine and run the validation, I get this error.

Validation Failure: Invalid Product Key[0x80080222]

Why did it not validate?
The product key associated with your copy of Windows was never issued by
Microsoft.

It looks like you can't contact Microsoft without paying $35, so where do I
go from here?

Thanks for any help.

Was the copy of Windows XP an OEM copy that CAME with the other computer?

This might give you a clue:

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,122058,00.asp

A Microsoft spokesperson conceded on Friday that hackers had indeed
succeeded in cracking the WGA program, but said that the software giant will
fix the flaw they exploited in an upcoming version of the WGA program.

And:

David Keller, founder of PC consulting and services firm Compu-Doctor in
Cape Coral, Florida, was able to change his Internet Explorer settings to
bypass WGA when he ran into a flaw in the program that flagged a legitimate
product key on a customer's Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 as
invalid.

"The customer was the original owner, no hardware was changed since
purchase, nor was Windows ever reinstalled on the system," Keller said in an
e-mail to the IDG News Service. WGA had rejected the operating system,
nevertheless, thereby preventing Windows Update from working, he said.

Both computers are home builds. My copy of Windows XP was bought separately
online. I don't even remember where now, but I do have the hologram
certificate of authenticity stuck to my computer, and the disk is definately
genuine with high quality holgrams everywhere they should be according to
Microsofts page. It came in a plastic sleeve with a WinXP booklet of some
sort. No box, so I assume it is technically OEM. It definately does not
have any customizations from Dell, HP, or anyone else though.

Then you have likely been another hit with the false validation...
Yep. WGA - good idea - in theory - but not all theories should become
practice.

Some of those fixes don't work now. There are others. I can't say
it here.

I am having the same issue. I have the original windows XP Professional SP2
OEM version. Earlier today it validated fine. I had to reinstall windows (dvd
driver issue) and I reactivated it over the phone. I tried going to windows
update and when it validated it gave me the same error. I tried calling
microsoft, they didn't even listen to the issue. They said I either had to
solve it myself or pay 35 dollars!!! I am calling them back tomorrow and
screaming at somebody until they understand that the issue is not with
windows xp but the validation. If they are not supporting the damn thing they
should not put it up. I am really annoyed and dissapointed with Microsoft
support on the activation/ validation issue. By buying the software I am
expecting to be able to use it without spending hours or even days to get
permition from them to use the windows I payed for. Especially when for the
past few months including earlier today they proved, every time I validated,
that I have the original cd. I understand why they are validating and I am ok
with it, but they are not providing any support or help regarding issues with
that. I am seriously thinking of going into Linux or another operating
system.

I use a Mac as well as now seriously considering dumping Windows altogether,
they have my money and give this aggro when legitimately trying to update.
Not to mention if they made the software available at a resonable cost they
would not have a priacey issue.
Poor My gates needs the money I guess. I am one VERY disgruntled Windows user.

I clean installed Windows 3 months ago and hade no issue registering and
activating XP then!
