I bought a copy of Windows XP about four years ago and loaded it on my
laptop. When the Service Pack 2 came out, I tried to load it on my laptop,
but I didn't have enough diskspace and rather than warning me, the install
went forward until my laptop basically stopped working. I ended up removing
XP and reinstalling Windows 98. I then loaded the XP on an old PC of mine.
Unfortunately, that PC completely died and I disposed of it a few weeks ago.
In the meantime, I was given an old desktop PC from a friend, but that
computer had Windows 98. I installed my copy of XP but when I wanted to
install SP2, I received a message, ": Validation Incomplete: Unable to
Perform Validation." It is a legal copy and it is not running on any other
machine. How can I get it validated so that I can give this machine the
update it needs?

Windows Genuine Advantage - Diagnostic Site
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

The Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation check process
does not complete when you try to validate your copy of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905226/en-us

You receive a "Validation Incomplete: Online Validation Failure"
error message or a "0x80080204" error code when you try to validate Windows XP
