Validation Update

My sister-in-law sent her laptop to "a friend" for some repairs. It had 98
SE on it but he put XP PRO on it.

When I go to Windows Update and try to get the validation update I get a
message saying an error has occurred see system administrator (or something
to that effect).

Can't get the VU or any other update. Did he put an illegal copy of XP on or
could there be some other reason for this?

If the copy of XP is legal, then your sister-in-law will possess a
Certificate of Authenticity (CoA), with an XP Product Key. If your
suister-in-law does not possess a CoA, then the copy of XP on this laptop
might be not genuine.

It is possible that the failures to validate might be something to do with
this copy of XP being so hacked that the validation process is obstructed.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/ and click "Start
Diagnostic", and follow through with the instructions. If you reach the
other end, click "Windows Validation". After a reboot, does that fix the
problem?

Finally, to narrow down the possibilities a bit, can you download the
diagnostic program from
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062
run it, click "Copy to clipboard", and then paste the clipboard into a
follow-up in this thread.

That looks as if the Windows XP Home is Genuine.

.... but Office is apparently not genuine.

Please download and install:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...d496154544.exe

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

Hello Robin,

Thanks for your quick reaction. I don't understand why Office would not be
genuine because I have the official package and even the invoice. I'll check
that with Microsoft.
I have tried your link and it worked ! Great but also strange, because I
downloaded the same diagnostic program from the MS site earlier and that
didn't do the job.
Thanks again,
