Various programs not fully shutting down

I'm running Windows Vista and just recently started running into problems
with shutting down various programs. After opening up microsoft word, excel
or various other programs, of course I'll eventually shut them down. When I
do everything seems to be working fine, but then I'll discover by opening the
task manager that the process is still running even though the program is not
open on the desktop or anywhere else. I can then end the process and things
go back to normal, but this is becoming very tedious. Any ideas about causes
or solutions? Thanks a bunch.
