Many thanks for previous answers.
Yes, finalizing the DVD worked
I found that DVD-R need finalizing but DVD+RW disks do not
But why was I able to play the unfinalized DVD-R on one machine and not on
two others.
What was special about the first PC?

Almost anything will play a finalised DVD. If the disc is un-finalised,
then you can only play it on a system which will play unfinalised discs.
They are easy to spot, they are the ones that play unfinalised discs.

Yours is a hardware issue, as this is a WMP group you'd be best
visiting this excellent site for all things video:
http://www.videohelp.com/guides

A quick note on finalising.
It is not an issue of DVD-R Vs DVD-RW, when it comes to finalizing
it is dependent on a whole heap of factors. UNfinalized *multisession* `
maybe readable on other DVD-ROM/burner drives, but if you meant
by 3 "machines" to be standalone DVD players, if one of those read
an unfinalized DVD you were lucky. .

Well, it was a paraphrase of the section on finalising discs in my SONY
DCR-DVD202E manual. Paraphrased again: If you want it to work on other
DVD players, then finalise the disc; it will work. If you don't finalise
the disc, then good luck (you'll need it).

You could pick three identical players and still have it work on just
one of them, maybe because it was manufactured a day later than the
others and had newer firmware in the DVD drive. There is no predicting
why such things happen, and most likely no explanations after the fact
either.
