Ive got a 500GB WD Elements USB drive which now i cant delete, rename
,defrag all because i installed microsoft C++ 2005 x64. Its some bug in
this exe.
The only help ive found so far is a link to 'ask' microsoft to send me
a hotfix, i dont know why i cant just download it from their site

Please can anyone help with ideas how to get rid of this, theres no
option to delete, take ownership or use an app like unlocker .
Only thing i can think of is to copy all to another drive & format the
WD USB

We seem to have had a similar problem. I run vista 64 business.
Without any known faulty action on my part, today I found my external
2TB, raid0 (two physical drives) to be read only. Error message told me
approximately that disk was write protected and pointed to file
"msdia80.dll as the problem child. Permissions could not be changed to
remedy read only status (error pops up, again naming msdia80.dll). I
copyed the disk's contents elsewhere in preparation to delete the volume
and start over but disk manager wouldn't let me - all options to make
changes, include delete vol, were not available. The fix that finally
worked for me was simple - ran a check disk - scheduled it for next
reboot. After this was done, when I opened up the disk properties, I
WAS then able to add the extra permissions. Hope this helps.
