verclsid.exe issues (still)

I'm trying to help my mother resolve problems that began when the 908531
update involving vercisid.exe was installed. We're 5 hours apart, so
everything is by phone and/or email. Her problems fit very closely those
described in the MS bulletins and the ng. She's running XP SP2, with
automatic update enabled. I would appreciate some guidance from those who
understand these things....

This update seems to indicate that affected computers would automatically
receive a revised update addressing the problems if automatic update was
enabled, but she is still having the same problems. A few questions -

1) Did the update revision have a new update number? If so, I can walk her
thru the "Review Update History" to see if it shows up.

2) Is there a way for her to force another download of the update revision?
Good idea/bad idea?

3) If the revised update is there but problems persist, what next? Under the
circumstances, a Regedit is out of the question. Does she need to take it to
a shop?

No, it was the same update number. The entries in Update History (if both
exist) will look identical. The revised one will have been installed after
April 25.

Send her to the Windows Update/Microsoft Update web site, and click Custom.
Review the list of critical updates. If 908531 is on the list, it can be
downloaded and installed. Otherwise, a forced installation of this update
will not help - if it can help, Windows Update will offer it. If the PC
does not have either of the two known issues, the revised 908531 will not be
offered by Windows Update.
