In the security bulletin for the update, it is documented what to
look for to see if the update installed successfully.
For an example, see e.g. the "Verifying Update Installation" section
under "General Information" \ "Security Update Information" \
"Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP Service Pack 2" at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-038.mspx
There you will also see that Microsoft recommends using "Microsoft
Baseline Security Analyzer" (MBSA) to see if updates are installed
or not.
