Verify Vista compatibility with a certain application. Possible?

Hi everyone.

I just acquired "Windows Vista Ultimate", plan to upgrade my Desktop (from
XP Professional) but I'm kinda afraid... that computer requires a custom
application, which I need to constantly use. However, I can't find any
information about it online (i.e. if it works with Vista or not), is there
any way, any application I could use, to check if it is fully compatible
with Vista?

Check with the software company that produced the application?

Try is out on another computer / virtual machine running Vista?

I can neither install it on other computer/virtual machine (it has plenty of
definitions, and I need to be sure that ALL of them are accounted
correctly - basically, it is a custom program that tracks and manages my
bandwidth) nor contact the company (it's a custom program - the company
would be basically, my friend next door >_>).

If its a custom application, you would be the one in the position of
verifying compatibility if you are the developer. You can try running
Windows Vista in a Virtual Machine and test the application to verify
compatibility, you can contact the developer, visit their website to find
out about Vista compatibility, patches, updates or new versions. Most 32 bit
applications will work just fine on Vista, if you are running Vista x64,
applications with 16 bit installers or 16 bit apps in general or not
compatible.

Here is a link to the Vista Enterprise 30 trial you can run in Virtual PC

You yourself won't be able to tell until you try it.

Or, ask your friend next door if it is Vista compatible.

Your options are limited if this application is that critical for you and
you cannot use a virtual machine to test the application.

Since you have already purchased Vista, your best bet would be to set up a
dual boot. This will allow you to test the application on a full install of
Vista, while still retaining XP.

If the application works, you can format the Vista partition and go ahead
and upgrade XP to Vista.
