VERIZON - Phone call with Messenger

Anyone had problems with Verizon / Windows Live Messenger?
To sign up I used my Mastercard and now I need to top-up my account they
don't accept anything but VISA, AMEX, DINERS so I'm left with the choice of
signing up for a new credit card or changing over to Google Chat to call
friends or use Skype.
It's a shame as I love to use Windows Live Messenger but this will force me
and other Mastercard users to other systems - big marketing error!
Are there problems with Mastercard?
