When the version 5 attempts to install I get the error message Windows Update
has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page with an error
number of Error number: 0x80070002. The update log file seems to work OK
until it gets to the following: Target file C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuapi.dll
doesn't exist and then at the end I get these InstallUpdatedBinaries failed
with error 0x80070002 and UpdateClientWorker failed: error 0x80070002

Mike,

Can you please try each of these, one by one and let me know if they resolve
your problem?

Delete the contents of the DataStore folder
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service
A. Click Start.
B. Choose Run.
C. In the Run box, type services.msc.
D. Click OK.
E. Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
F. Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.
NOTE: The following will delete your History.

2. Delete the contents of the DataStore folder
A. Click Start.
B. Choose Run.
C. In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution.
D. Click OK.
E. Open the DataStore folder.
F. Delete all contents of the DataStore folder.
G. Close the window.

3. Start the Automatic Updates service
A. Click Start.
B. Choose Run.
C. In the Run box, type services.msc.
D. Click OK.
E. Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
F. Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

Many thanks,

-David Herman

It looks to me like your using WUv4 there.
Can you post the last few lines from WindowsUpdate.log (notice no space)?

Cheers,

like it did the first time that I tried...by saying that the wuapi.dll does
not exist and then everything goes downhill (rollback) from there...
