Trying to make sure my system is up to date. I log into the "new" windows
update site, I believe it is Version 6. Click on either express or custom
and the scan starts and stays running. I left it on overnight and it was
still running. Interestingly enough, I tried another approach at
"http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp" and there was
no problem scanning my machine. Additionally, When I use the driver update
uility during the install new hardware process (I've been swapping sound
cards) it hangs too. It appears part of the update is working as my
WindowsUpdate.log shows many files do not require update...but the scan never
ends. I have no idea if I am missing anything important or whatever, but
this does tighten jaw. I'm providing the last part of the log below and
thanks to any for your help.

Oops, for got that...Windows XP SP 2, Media Edition with upgrade to 2005, but
lists as 2002. All patches, updates etc applied through 2 Aug 2005, unsure
of anything else since then, hence this thread.

Well the problem is resolved...in one word "Norton". For a while (and in
fact well prior to losing my access to updating) Norton has been pestering me
to install my anti-virus, which was already installed! Having spent so much
time trying to get updating working I thought I might as well uninstall and
then reinstall Norton's AV, if nothing else to get rid of the obnoxious, and
as I thought, totally unneeded "install" buttons. I hadn't even finished
with the uninstall when the updates came flooding in. Of course I
reinstalled Norton AV and now it doesn't pester me and updates work! So my
resolution to this problem was simple, after the fact.

Thanks for posting back. The first rule of thumb when having problems at
Windows Update is to temporarily disable your AV app and/or firewall to see
if one or both of them might be causing problems. NAV's Script Blocker is
known to cause problems at Windows Update, too.
