For some reason v5 of Windows Update is on my machine (see my other post) and I got notified of an update for Q867801 which I allowed to install. After it installed I checked the file versions of the installed files against those listed in the bulletin and saw they were different. I then downloaded the update from the URL in the update and those files were correct.

I have Windows XP Pro SP1 with IE SP1

Here's the file that Windows Update automatically installed:

http://au.download.windowsupdate.com...38d5504cce.exe

This file contained mshtml.dll version 6.0.2800.1400
and shlwapi.dll version 6.0.2800.1557

The update file from the bulletin is at:

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...01-x86-ENU.exe

It contains mshtml.dll version 6.0.2800.1458 and shlwapi.dll
version 6.0.2800.1552

The rest of the files matched. So Windows Update automatically installed an older version of mshtml.dll and a newer version of shlwapi.dll

After I rebooted after installed the WU version I installed the one I downloaded manually which updated the two files to the correct version.

What's going on here?

Michael,

Did you have any 3rd party software (antivirus program, pop-up|ad
blocker, download manager, internet "accelerator", etc.) running in
the background during the download and installation of 867801 ? Did
you reboot the system immediately after it was downloaded and
installed ?
Occassionally, IE updates have issues replacing files that are in
use when IE is open and running IF 3rd party software interferes
with the file replacement. Downloading the update manually and
installing it with IE not running will solve this issue, as you have
discovered.

I do have Norton Internet Security running, but I don't believe that was the problem since I checked the actual file that Windows Update v5 downloaded and opened it up using winzip and the versions in that file were the versions that got installed.

The version of Q867801 that is downloaded with Windows Update V5 is 6,0,2800,1557. The version that can be downloaded from the bulletin is 6,0,2800,1552. The strange thing is that the 6,0,2800,1557 contains older versions of the file, but since it's q867801.inf version is newer, the older versions get preference.

This is why after I installed the manual update from the bulletin, Windows Update kept reporting I hadn't installed the update yet.

I got around this by installing the Windows Update version of Q867801 so WU would stop bothering me and then installed the IE SP1 rollup Q871260 which contains the newer file versions.

Not the best way of doing this, but it got around the WU problem.

Hi

The WU v5 of MS04-025/KB867801 was re-released yesterday because
of this issue.
