Very interesting post-SP1 CPU usage...

With 2 or 3 apps running (firefox, thunderbird, etc), CPU usage drops to
zero percent and rarely exceeds 5%.

Closing all apps and just watching the CPU Usage in the Windows Task
Manager (after waiting for things to "settle down"), the CPU usage is
HIGHER (5-19%) than with several apps open. My THEORY (or perhaps my
WAG) is that by not having apps open, Vista is running Indexing
operations, consuming more CPU time than my frequently used apps
require. Had I not started this post, i would just close them all and
check it right now. I'll reply to my own post in a bit...

It's my perception (and I may be wrong), but SP1 seems to be reducing
CPU load. Anyone have a definitive take on this subject? I'm no expert
in these matters--just providing my non scientific observation.

guess i didnt wait long enough, with apps closed. now with nothing
running, typical cpu usage goes all the way down to zero percent, and
usually tops out at 8%.

with excel, word, firefox, thunderbird, sunbird all open, i still see cpu
usage often hit zero percent. I don't recall this low of cpu usage, even
when I had Indexing turned off, pre-SP1.

what do the rest of you see for CPU usage?

I am anxious to download SP1, but it has not been offered to me yet through
Win update. I have the link to download from the site, but (leery me) read
the bold type that says if it has not been offered through windows update
wait for the download. Did you download the full version or did you
download yourself?

I'm with you, and am awaiting the automatic update. Figure there might be a
reason for that delay....

I got sp1 thru windows (control panel, windows update, check for updates
now). My wife's Gateway laptop can't get it because of a Sigma sound
card driver.. Gateway has no solution at the moment.

That's interesting. I have the Conexant HD Audio, but when I checked the
driver versions they were later than the troublesome drivers listed. I have
checked Windows update daily...got excited a little while ago when I saw an
update notice...only to find out it was for Win Defender...drat!!! I
suppose I am just not on the queue yet.
