VERY Slow MP4 playback startup in Vista

Under WinXP on my Dell xps M1710 very large MP4 files (ca. 700MB in size)
would load and start playing in a couple of seconds (using 3ivx codec).

Now under Vista Ultimate (installed cleanly) on the same hardware; it takes
85 SECONDS to begin playback of the same MP4 files.

I get the same poor playback on a very fast desktop PC also running Vista on
a fast RAID drive. BTW, I am talking files stored *locally* not on a network
drive, so network performance isn't a factor.

So, what on earth is going on?

Is it just MP4 playback? How is WMV and MPEG playback in those same
scenarios?

This question would potentially direct you as to what you would want to
investigate...

yes, its just MP4. MPEG & WMV are fine. At first I thought it was Quicktime
to blame, but now I have 3ivx 5.0 installed as weel and that hasn't improved
matters. Strangely on a 3rd laptop, also running Vista, MP4 playback startup
is normal (just like WinXP). So I'm left with several factors that are
common to both PC's that are having the problem, and which don't exist on the
3rd laptop:

1. Both problem PC's have dual core Intel CPU's (one is Pentium D the other
Core 2 Duo).

2. Both problem PC's have SATA drives (one is running a Raid0 array).

3. Both problem PC's have Nero 7.o installed (which installs various A/V
codecs).

It is my opinion that one of these (3) things currently has a problem with
the Vista O/S.
