Here are two strange updates that show up in the download pages but no valid
KB (or valid but OS doesn't apply):

954723 - no existant KB for a security update
950582 - added to MS08-038 but not in KB or bulletin

MS08-038: Vulnerability in Windows Explorer could allow remote code
execution
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950582/

Applies to Vista and Server 2008 and was part of July 2008 updates.

Ya but if you do a search of the KB number in Windows downloads, updates are
available for Win XP and Win Server 2003 now.

See

That once came in late. Referring to KB950582 (see
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...DisplayLang=en). Not in KB but can be downloaded for Win XP and Server 2003.

As regards XP and this particular "update" for Windows Explorer, the
security bulletin for August 08 makes no mention. The July 08 bulletin
mentions that it does not apply to XP SP2 or SP3.
It is possible (?) you are seeing either a delayed distribution to Downloads
Center or (?) it is intended for poor souls running xp sp1 (?)

The KBs aren't always published at the time the update icon appears in
the Notification area, Gis.
Same goes for the Security bulletins.
