Video call doesn't allow me control my audio

When I am in a webcam video call with Windows Live Messenger, I can hear and
see my friend fine, and my video feed is fine, but I have no control over my
audio. It won't let me turn the microphone volume up on the control next to
my video feed. It won't even move up and down when I try to drag it.

I've tried muting and un-muting it, nothing works there. (in fact it doesn't
even seem to do those functions)

I know it's not a problem with my microphone because my Microsoft Lifecam
VX-3000 works for me in Skype without problems.
