Greetings Neil,
I believe what you're describing is normal echo due to the delay of Internet transmission and
digital conversion. Although Messenger does have an echo canceller, your speakers' volume
will need to be set moderately for it to work properly.
To make sure the echo canceller is on, both of you should check the option in the Audio and
video setup wizard. To do so, open any Messenger window and press the Alt key on the
keyboard. Then choose the Tools menu and then Audio and Video setup. During the speaker
setup, make sure the 'Click here if you are using headphones' option is unchecked and then
finish the wizard. Now try again.
Failing all this, you may want to invest in a small headset to use instead as that would
completely eliminate the problem from your side.
