video conference with a mac

I am attempting to video conference with a Mac user. He installed Live
Messenger for Mac and registered with Windows Live. When I attempted to
start a video call with him, I received a message that his version of
Messenger does not support video. We could chat fine, but we want video.
His system indicated there is an updated version, but the link it gave does
not work. He installed version 6.0.3. Is there a version that will work on
a Mac and allow video conferencing between a Mac and a PC?

Greetings,

Not presently -- the Mac version of Messenger does not support video.

Your best for this scenario right now is to use Skype on both computers (www.skype.com).

We did attempt Skype. Apparently Skype has issues with the latest Mac OS
(Leopard) because it did not run the registration wizard to set up an account
so the Mac could not log into Skype. I guess we'll just have to keep trying
other packages until we find something that will work. I wish Apple and
Microsoft would learn to play nice together.

Thanks, anyway.

Hi,

Well it works fine on Leopard for a friend of mine. But that's not the only option,

Additionally, you could use AIM (www.aim.com) on the PC and the Mac user can use iChat as
iChat will log onto the AIM network and the voice/video is backwards compatible within the
two products. I've also used this in the past.

Or you could use Yahoo Messenger on both platforms.

Or the mac client could use aMSN, but you'll only get webcam (no audio).

Thanks, for the info. I hadn't heard of AIM. I also found a beta version of
Skype that is designed for Mac 10.5. Apparently this new Mac upgrade has a
built in firewall that causes problems with Skype. Kind of reminds me of
when XP SP2 came out. Everybody turned off the firewall until they figured
out how to use it. We'll try these options.

Hi,

Great. I wouldn't mind hearing how you get on with whichever option you chose too if you
have a second later after trying the various options.

Jonathan,

We are going to get together this weekend and work on this some more. I'll
let you know how it turns out and what we use.

Thanks

Jonathan,

We weren't able to spend much time on it over the weekend. We did get Yahoo
to work the best so far. The Mac user was able to see video from the PC, but
no audio. The PC received nothing but text from the Mac. I think this may
have been user error that we may be able to resolve in the future. As much
as I hate to have anything related to Yahoo on my machine, I may end up using
that. Such is life.

I hope you had a merry Christmas (if you celebrate it).
