With Windows XP if you used explorer to browse files - .gif animated files
showed the animation in the viewing pane.

Vista just shows a still frame

Is there any way to set up Vista to view the animation.

Gif still seems to be a common file format for small animations like smilies
and signatures.

If it is now obsolete - what has taken its place that I can convert to...?

Hi,

Animation is viewed when the file is opened in the default program for them,
Internet Explorer. Animation does not occur when the file is previewed
(either in explorer or the picture and fax viewer).

You can view them with Internet Explorer, or a free program, like Irfanview.

However, the animation does show in the preview pane of Vista Windows Mail.

You have discovered yet another feature commonly used in XP that is not
properly implemented in Vista. I use Irfanview and associate .gif files with
that. I wonder if the XP File/Fax viewer can be somehow used in Vista? IMHO
it is far better than the kludge that it has now become.Anyone know what the
actual executable is? HTH James

It's not an executable, it's the function of a library (.dll) file. Also,
the XP version cannot be used in Vista, precisely because it too is a
function of an older version of that library file.
