on XP i used to be able to hover my mouse over the connection icon and view
my internet speed. now all it says in vista is "currently connected to local
and internet".
i would very much like to know the exact speed of my connection (e.g 2meg
etc) how would i go about to do this?

That indication only showed the "speed" of your NIC, not your actual
speed on the 'net.

Go to a website that actually tests your speed.

Here's a good one:

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Rightclick the Taskbar for 'Task Manager', and click the 'Networking' tab.
